1 English Wools
These may be divided into two classes: - (1) Long wools - Lincoln, Leicester, Romney Marsh, BIackfaced. (2) Short wools - South Down, Hampshire, Oxford and Norfolk Downs. See under each name, and British wools. -
2 Crossbred Wools
This term is applied to wools obtained from sheep of mixed breed. The bulk of the wools of commerce are cross-bred. They are produced in New Zealand, Australia and South America, and nearly all are the progeny of English Lincoln, Leicester or Romney sheep. -
3 Lincoln Wool
A lustrous and thick English wool which spins 38's to 40's yarns. An average weight of fleece is 10/12-lb. of long fibre. One of the most important of English wools as it is the longest and strongest type, having a 12-in. staple. -
4 Hampshire Down Wool
A wool somewhat similar to South Down, but has greater length and is perhaps of coarser staple. An average weight of fleece is about 51/2-lb. The wool spins to about 50's to 56's. It is of good quality, and the fibre is one of the finest of English wools, while the sheep are the largest of Down sheep.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Hampshire Down Wool

5 Norfolk Down Wool
A short wool, but fine and soft. The strength and elasticity are not as good as the other short English wools. -
6 Carpet Yarns
For the manufacture of carpets a full handling thread is necessary, the fibre must be strong and suitable for dyeing in bright colours. The wools mostly used are Scotch black-faced. East Indian, the lower qualities of English and Colonial wools. These yarns are usually spun on the worsted principle, and are carded, open drawn and flyer spun. Some are combed, but when the thread is required to have filling characteristics this operation is omitted. For Brussels and tapestry carpets. East Indian and Scottish black-faced wools are used. Wilton and Axminster carpets are usually made from Welsh or Down wools. -
7 Italian Wool
Italian wool is not of such great production as to influence any comparison with the great wool producing areas. The chief Italian areas are the centres and southern ranges, and the Islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The wools grown are merino, fine crossbred, and part carpet wool, similar to Scottish-grown blackfaced. The merino is not of a high standard, being somewhat " lean " and lacks fulsomeness. The fine crossbred is an excellent hosiery type, and may be substituted at times or blended with English Down wools. Much of the wool is consumed in Italy, but at times a fair quantity reaches England. -
8 Lustre Wool
English long wool, having a strong, long and glossy staple, used for dress goods; also the wools grown in Indiana and Kentucky. The chief British lustre wools are Lincoln, Leicester, Notts, and Yorkshire (see under each name) -
